With my recent success of hunting down the parents and family of my 2nd Great Grandfather’s second wife, I thought I’d spend a little more time documenting what I do and don’t know about his first wife. Sometimes thinking through the process and making a checklist is helpful for me.

What I do know:

1. Family record: Family record transcribed by my mother in the 1970′s from a source labeled “Family Bible” says that John Keener’s first wife and the mother of my Great Grandfather Robert Lee McCall was named Martha Olive “Ollie” Johnson. The rough chart says:

OLIVE ? JOHNSON
BORN 1872? MESSOUR?
WHERE Stark City (Newton) <-- Monet, Missouri?
Misouri
DIED ? 1916
WHERE gravelly (yell) ARKANSAS

and for her parents are listed:
Father: Van(?) Johnson - Misouri Greene Springfield
Mother: SHEPARD Missouri

This is the image:

Family Pedigree focused on Olive Johnson and missing parents. Record says Family Bible as source.

2. Marriage record: In a marriage index for Yell County included in the Yell County Historical & Genealogical Association Bulletin by Mary V. Humphrey it shows her as Johnson, Olive – age 19.

(Husband) McCall, J. K. (age) 21 Yell (County, AR)
(Wife) Johnson, Olive (age) 19 Yell (County, AR)
(Marriage Date) 11-30-1893

This is the record:

<img alt="Marriage Index record for J.K. McCall and Olive Johnson dated 11-30-1893. Also notice in the index is his marriage with his second wife Azle Mercer." src="http://www.igenealogy.org/blogimages/mccall_jk-ollie_marriage.jpg" title="Marriage Index record for J.K. McCall and Olive Johnson dated 11-30-1893. Also notice in the index is his marriage with his second wife Azle Mercer.

3. Census Records: After marrying J.K. McCall they lived in Yell County, Arkansas and the couple was included in 2 census before Olive died.

In the 1900 Census they are located in Danville, Yell County, Arkansas.

This is the record:

4. Death Records: I found and index of from the Arkansas Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, Certificates of Death. The dates covered are 1914-1923. There are 29 McCalls listed, and none of them are in Yell County, none of them died in December of 1916 and none of them are Olive.

5. Facts: Olive McCall could have not been born in Stark City, Missouri. It didn’t exist until after the year she died. Wikipedia article on Stark City. Family memory could place her there at a later date, so Newton County is a reasonable option to still explore.

6. Photographic Evidence: I have a picture of her and J.K. McCall taken after her first two children were born. It is located on another post entitles John Keener “J.K.” & Martha Olive “Ollie” McCall – A Family Photo

So what’s next?

I’ve done many searches through Ancestry.com on many combinations of names for Olive with different locations. I’ve looked through all of Newton County Johnson families to see if there was some names that were similar. None. I don’t quite know where “Martha” came from, as it wasn’t included in any of my records that I listed above. J.K.’s second wife was Martha, but went by Azle her whole life. Perhaps that was a mistake as well?

I’m a bit stumped at where to look next on this one. I had hoped to find her with her parents in the 1880 census, but “Van?” born in either Georgia or Tennessee is much less than what I’d like to go on. She would be 6 in the census, and probably called Ollie or Olive. I did follow one path where a grandmother was named Olive and perhaps it was passed down, but I found another dead end.

Her parents are my only 3rd Great Grandparents I do not know the information for, and so I’m going to try a few other things. I keep going back to those original notes of my mothers thinking that there is a clue there that I’m missing. I’ll keep you updated on what I find.

The following is a rough table showing the pedigree for my paternal McCall family starting with my Great Grandfather Robert Lee McCall who married Etoyl Montgomery in 1920.

The links that are located below their names are to the individual blog posts I’ve made. Since I’ve been focusing primarily on the paternal sides of every family, you’ll typically only find links for them.

The biggest hole in the ancestors of my Great Grandpa McCall are his mother’s parents. I only have sparse records of who they may be or where they may have come from. I hope to focus on this mystery again in the near future and document what I find. (Which hopefully is a lot!)

Charles C. Crawley is my 3rd Great Grandfather (GGG) though his daughter Levicia Ellen (Crawley) Montgomery. It’s been a while since I created a timeline from scratch for one of my relatives, and I’ve got to remember clearer how I pulled together all the pieces. That aside, I think this one might be a little rough around the edges, or missing a few pieces.

While working on this timeline I discovered something I didn’t know before, and thus the reason to create the timelines in the first place. While looking to see the exact location where Charles Crawley’s wife Martha Jane (Aubry) Crawley was buried, I thought to look at Find A Grave’s website. Luckily, they had a photo of her grave. I also noticed that they had quite a bit of information included for people buried in this cemetery along-side the grave photos, so I thought to see if there were other Crawleys buried there. I ended up finding her daughter (Which gave me exact birth, death dates and marriage). I also found another possible relative – a daughter of a Crawley who married a Lofland – that I’ll have to figure out who it is.

Here is the timeline I’ve put together for Charles C. Crawley as it stands now:

I believe in miracles, how ever small they may be. While corresponding with Rick Lawrence, an online researcher I had connected with through genealogy.com on my Crawley family, I witnessed one. He mentioned receiving some scans of photographs of my 3rd Great Grandparents Charles C. Crawley and Martha Jane Aubrey from some connections in Austin, Texas. (Janie Parrish?) The owner of the photos had found the picture of Martha quite comical as it looked as though she was holding a cigar in her hand.

When Rick forwarded the pictures to me, I touched them up a bit and sent them back, and kept thinking that the picture of Charles looked quite familiar. I looked back through the old photocopies that my mother had made from my Great Grandparents collection, and there it was staring me in the face… the unlabeled match to the picture I had just received by email. It was slightly different, as though it had been taken a moment before or after the previous one, but it was surely a match. A little miracle.

And for future reference, it was a not a cigar at all. As I retouched the photo, what appeared to be a cigar between Martha’s fingers was actually the spine of the family bible. In one of my other family photos of this time-period I’ve noticed the wife with the family bible in hand. Perhaps this was a traditional thing? It sure does change your perception on Martha versus the cigar, doesn’t it?

I was looking through some of my things recently and ran across some pictures that an internet friend (Rick Lawrence) had sent me. In addition to telling me great stories passed on from his mother about my Montgomery relatives, we swapped much information on the Crawley side of my family. Charles C. Crawley is my 3rd Great Grandfather and the mother of Levicia Ellen Crawley who married Dr. Thomas Marion Montgomery in 1892.

Rick took this photo in Parks Cemetery, Nola, Scott County, Arkansas and sent it to me by mail. I’ve cropped in a close-up to see the name better in the second photo. Here’s what he said about finding the grave: “I began searching the Crawley line in 1999. I had no idea who they were, where they were buried, etc. Many of the Yates’ are buried in Scott County at Parks Cemetery, a mile from the Yell County line. In May 2000, I was down there for Decoration Day and was searching for some unmarked graves of my Yates ancestors (which I found!!!). Nancy Crawley Yates is buried there as well. I surmised that since the Yates’ and the Crawleys were basically neighbors, that Chas and Martha must be in that cemetery as well. However, I never searched for them as I was busy with the Yates search. I was standing amongst a group of headstones looking around the cemetery when i looked down at the stone I was next to…and lo and behold it was Chas. C. Crawley! His daughter Ida was one space over from him. I now decorate his and Ida’s grave on Decoration Day…probably the first to do so in over 50 years.” – Rick “Guns” Lawrence
